Getting Everything Ready
When a cat comes in to us for fostering, we rarely know what they have been through.
They could have faced moderate to severe trauma or indeed no trauma at all. Regardless of this, cats don’t like change so any moving around will mean that kitty will need time to adjust.
Rescue cats will generally need
3-5 days to decompress
3 weeks to learn your routine
and
3 months to feel at home.
We ask you to put them in a “safe room” which should be a quiet room with no heavy traffic, so that they can start the process of decompression. A spare room is perfect if you have other pets.
In general we tend to find that when you get the cat home they will want to hide, usually under the bed or behind something. If there is space in your safe room, it would really help to create a den of some description where they can hide and feel safe.
Please ensure that kitty has the following essentials in the safe room.
- one litter tray per cat, and preferably a spare one if practical
- fresh water, ideally from a water fountain
- cat or kitten food, both wet and dry
- bedding or beds
All food and litter is covered by us - just contact us for top-ups before you run out completely!
Fosters might not eat or drink for a few days, and the stress of a new environment might result in a bit of a runny bum for a short while. Please don’t worry as this is totally normal, but if you are at all concerned just contact us.
