Next Steps

Each kitty is different. Providing a safe environment with everything they need allows them to adjust at their own pace.

Slowly and gently is the way forward.

It’s always a good idea to sit quietly in the room with kitty so they know that you are there and they can get used to your presence.

Talk to them quietly and calmly about anything at all - your day, your shopping list, your favourite Taylor Swift lyrics (especially Taylor Swift lyrics!) ...anything at all. They just need to hear your friendly voice.

Allow them to come to you in their own time. With time, patience and understanding kitty will start to learn to trust again. Please note that every cat will be different so some will come on quicker and faster than others. Don’t try to force it - always let them dictate the pace.

If you have no other cats in your home, you are welcome to allow your foster charge to have full access to your home after a period of adjustment and when they appear settled. Slowly allow them access to perhaps one more room at a time. It’s highly recommend to put them back in their safe room at night however.

Important Note

Foster cats are not allowed to be let outside, for two reasons:

  • We don’t want them getting out and then getting lost and/or hurt.
  • We don’t want them adjusting to the area, developing a territory, and then being moved again when adopted.
